• Academy of Oriental Studies
    Peking University
Founded in 1999, PKU Institute for Eastern Studies has taken over the mantle of the Institute for Eastern Cultures run by the original Department of Eastern Studies which, for over 50 years after its inception in 1946, had been the single most important educational and research entity specializing in eastern studies among domestic universities. In the new century, the Institute for Eastern Studies will enhance academic and cultural exchanges with the East and the rest of the world in an effort to promote eastern studies of PKU and China as a whole.

    Arts & Culture Society
GCACS was initiated and sponsored by Professor Lin Xiangxiong, a Singaporean artist and entrepreneur, and registered in Singapore Registry of Societies (ROS) in 2010. This society, with Chinese culture as the center and carrier, aims to publish periodicals, promote cross-nation, cross-ethnic and cross-civilization cultural exchange, advocate cultural compatibility, communication by heart and civilization sharing, and construct a harmonious society.
Eastern cultures refer to Asian cultures and part of African cultures in comparison to European culture which is rooted in Greco-Roman civilization and Christian tradition. One of the birthplaces of human civilization, the Eastern world has seen rise up since the ancient times a number of civilized nations, which have been further grown, in the course of exchanges, fusion and development of various civilizations, into three major cultural spheres: East Asia cultural sphere which is centered around ancient China, South Asia cultural sphere around India and West Asia sphere based on Islamic culture. Rich in historical heritage, abundant in cultural literature, profound in accumulated wisdom and consistent in their view of life, Eastern cultures have contributed tremendously to the development of humanity.In modern times, however, many a country in the Eastern world had gone through the colonization or semi-colonization by westerners. In the violent collision with the western culture and through subsequent reflections and explorations, Eastern cultures have seen themselves in route of transformation and modernization, showing a trend of rising up and revival. Entering into the 21st Century and with the continuous elevation of international status of various nations in the East, the contents and value of Eastern Cultures, too, have been re-assessed and further studied. The 21st Century will be one of common prosperity for both Eastern and Western cultures, and Eastern Cultures will find back their splendor and play a more important role in the cultural development of human beings.In such a situation, Forum of Eastern Cultures in the 21st Century (FEC) attempts to explore the deep reservoir of the cultural heritage of the Eastern world, discover the properties and regular patterns of its cultural development, investigate its historical contribution to the world culture and to examine the direction and tendency of Eastern cultures in the new century. With a foothold at Peking University, FEC will stress its being on an international, academic and realistic basis. Here are to be gathering distinguished scholars of multi-cultural perspective who will promote not only the further development of eastern studies, but also the dialogue and exchange between various cultures in the world, which, as believed, are inexhaustible as a driving force to the harmonious progress of human beings.

Initiated by Professor Lin Xiangxiong, a renowned Singaporean artist, painter and successful entrepreneur, the Global Chinese Arts and Culture Society was created in August 2009 with the encouragement of his comrades in the field of culture from mainland China, in hope of accomplishing what he has been dreaming of since his sixties and now is capable to carry out with his accumulated wisdom, elevated artistic skills and the availability of financial resources drawn from his mining activities. As Prof. Lin stressed in his address at the inauguration of GCACS, the Great Way would not find its broad course in the world unless we take a tolerant attitude towards cultural diversity and hold a belief that each existent culture system has its own right for prosperity and every political system, however different in tradition, culture and geopolitical factors, is worth respect from others, and that is indispensable for a harmonious world as we are all expecting.As early as preparations for the establishment of GCACS, its Founding President Prof. Lin came up with an idea of setting up a foundation in benefits to the Eastern studies in Peking University, a special field pioneered by Prof. Ji Xianlin whom Prof. Lin holds in high esteem thanks to his theories and thinking on culture. Having drafted a cooperation plan, Prof. Lin paid a visit to Peking University on 27 February 2014 and had shared his conception of such a foundation which was later named Peking University Innovation Development Foundation for Eastern Studies.With the full support from the university leaders, notably from its Executive Vice-President Prof. Wu Zhipan and its former Vice-President Prof. Zhang Guoyou, the Agreement, after a series of view exchanges, modifications and amendments lasting over one month, was finally signed up between the Institute of Eastern Studies of Peking University, Hong Kong-based Innovation Fund Limited(created and fully owned by Prof. Lin) and Peking University Education Foundation.
